Welcome to Girls Write Now!GIRLS WRITE NOW is New York’s premier creative writing and mentoring organization for high school girls. Founded in 1998, our mission is to provide a safe space for girls to explore and develop their creative, independent voices, and learn how to make healthy choices in school, career and life. Our core mentoring program custom matches bright, driven high school girls with a burning desire to write with professional women writers currently working in journalism, publishing, education, theater, advertising/public relations, and more. Once paired, mentor and mentee work together one-on-one for 1 to 4 academic years. But that’s not all we do…uh-uh. Check it out! Two of our class of '08 mentees have been published on the Teen Ink Raw website! Teen Ink Raw is the newest member of the Teen Ink site and features RAW unedited submissions. Be sure to check out Sami Diaz’s short story “Wolves at Night,” and Amalie Kwassman’s poem “My Shadow Sister.” Readers rate each submitted piece and the ones with the highest ratings will be displayed on the website and in the RAW Reader’s Choice section of Teen Ink Magazine. So, support your fellow GWNers and provide feedback and ratings on their works! Girls Life Adventure Researcher Poised to Take On the Globe One Bottle at a TimeSubmitted by girlswritenow on Thu, 07/17/2008 - 4:19pm.By Tara Rajiyah

I am what you would call a bona fide bottled water snob. In fact, I'm pretty sure I've tried every single brand of bottled water. There's my tried and true favorite Poland Spring. The Rolls Royce, best tasting bottled waters: Evian and Voss. And then the there's the water that I refuse to touch: Aquafina. I know bottled water as well as I know the back of my own hands (whatever that means) and I just can't get enough of it. Recently, though, in doing preliminary research for the next Girls Life Adventure Quest #7: "The Environment," I've come to realize that I shouldn't proclaim my love too proudly.
Where Are They Now? Natalia Vargas-CubaSubmitted by girlswritenow on Thu, 07/10/2008 - 12:23pm.By Katie Priebe

For some, Girls Write Now doesn’t end when the program does. Such is the case with Ms. Natalia Vargas-Cuba, for whom writing remains a huge part of life. In addition to majoring in liberal arts at Bronx Community College, Natalia has immersed herself in writing outside of the classroom through Urban Word workshops. Girls Write Now introduced her to Urban Word, as well as other workshops like Pen America. In the spring, she was part of their Women’s Workshop, which was very similar to Girls Write Now: “We did an icebreaker, ate healthy snacks, and we shared what we wrote in exercises,” Natalia explained. It's hard to imagine someone more excited about entering college than Allison Pilatsky. In the fall she will be starting out at Smith College, located in Northampton, western Massachusetts. Allison chose Smith for its English department and the community, which made her feel "immediately welcome". Other schools she applied to include Sarah Lawrence, Vassar, Swarthmore, Wesleyan, Brown, CUNY, and Hunter. Smith stood out to her as "a great women's liberal arts college where you can get a well rounded education". She appreciates that students are "able to explore all areas" because "having a self-directed program is important". Girls Write Now also helped her with her decision, with her mentor acting as "someone to bounce ideas off of". Allison feels Girls Write Now has been a valuable resource in preparing for the college journey, providing "a good opportunity to work on my writing and develop it into a stronger style so I'll be more prepared for a college class room." New Online Survey for GWN AlumniCalling all mentor and mentee almuni! Girls Write Now has posted two new surveys in an effort to reconnect with our past members. We miss you! (Plus, we're nosy.)
